Dr. Jane Gumnick participates as a teacher and adviser with the local law enforcement Crisis Intervention Team (CIT.) The CIT is a joint program involving the Chattanooga Police Department, the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department, and local community mental health services. The program was initiated in 1988 in Memphis to train law enforcement personnel to manage situations involving mentally ill or other individuals in crisis situations. Hamilton County Sheriff’s Captain Michael Cribbs coordinates the Chattanooga program. So far two groups of 18 officers from the City Police Department and Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department have graduated from the program, one in the Fall of 2009 and one in March of 2010. This program has received very positive feedback from the community.

The next group will be trained in November.
